While a large number of us picture the summer as a period for having a fabulous time outside, for the elderly, the summer heat is a risk and can even be dangerous. Don’t Worry! With our five tips for beating the summer heat, you and your loved ones will be prepared for a summer free from stress.
Tip # 1: Drink Plenty of Cool Water
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! As we age, we become more vulnerable to dehydration. Particularly in the summertime with the expansion of heat, a risk of dehydration increases. Be sure to look for signs for dehydrations such as dry mouth, headaches, sleepiness, dizziness, To stay away from lack of hydration, specialist recommend consuming around 6 to 8 cups of water every day.
Tip # 2 Eat Cooling Snacks
Many seniors enjoy cooking, but working in the kitchen can be taxing, especially in the summertime. These simple but engaging snacks can help keep you or your loved one active all while beating the heat.
Fruit Salad. Fruits contain natural sugars and make a sweet snack any season of the year.
Trail mix. Although you can purchase a variety of trail mixers at the store. Encourage your loved one to create their own. Nuts are at the center of trail mix and is healthy and full of fiber.
Pre Cut Veggies. Veggies are around the clock easy colorful snacks.
Natural popsicles, Granola Bars and Yogurt squeeze tubes are all great healthy cool snacks. The more enjoyable the smacks are the cooler you’ll be!
Tip # 3 The Great Indoors
Consider getting a charge out of your summer from the comfort of your living room! Going outside in the immediate sunlight in the summer can be exhausting, particularly during the hottest time of the day, which is 3 pm. Instead, try to remain inside open a window while pursuing an extraordinary book, playing a card game or simply unwinding in the cold, air conditioned air.
Tip # 4 Protect Yourself
Be ready when you go outside on a hot summer day! Did you know that a study found in 2009 that older skin is more at risk to skin cancer? So, when going outside, be sure to wear protective clothing such as a hat, sunglasses, and even an umbrella to keep yourself out of the sun’s rays.
Tip # 5 No HEAT STROKE
Adults don’t adjust well to sudden changes in the temperature, so unfortunately with elders heat stroke is a much higher risk. Know the indications of Heat Stroke such as headache, elevated body temperature, hot and dry flushed skin, dizziness and disorientation.
To avoid heat stroke, remain hydrated, (see Tip #1), stay inside during extreme heat days (see Tip # 3), and stay protected when outside ( see Tip # 4).
